Twitter advertising campaign banned

Following a ruling by the Advertising Standards Authority, the UK’s advertising watchdog, a Twitter advertising campaign by Nike has been banned.

The ruling came about after just one complaint was received about two tweets posted by Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney and Arsenal player Jack Wilshire in January 2012. The tweets were posted at the request of the sportswear giant Nike.

The tweet from Jack Wilshire read “in 2012, I will come back for my club – and be ready for my country gonike.me/makeitcount”.

Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney – who has almost 4.8 million followers – posted “My resolution – to start the year as champion, and finish it as a champion…#makeitcount gonike.me/makeitcount”. The tweet has yet to be deleted.

This ruling marks the first time that a Twitter-based campaign has been acted upon by the Advertising Standards Agency.
