Instagram overtakes Twitter by 16 million

Instagram has recently announced that it has hit a new benchmark of 300 million users. In just 9 months, the site has gained an incredible 100 million users, with 70% of their total users coming from outside the U.S.

Twitter claims to bring 284 million users to the social media site each month. Facebook occupies the top spot with 1.35 billion people logging into their site.

Kevin Systrom, the CEO of Instagram, told Newsbeat, “Instagram is about seeing a live pulse of the world right now; it’s not just about taking a photo of a cute baby or a cute dog.’

The site, like many other social media platforms, will be adding the verification system. This is so that people know exactly who they are speaking to and sharing pictures with online.

He added, “We want to be all about authentic users and you making sure that you know you’re following real people not bots, not spam accounts, not fake accounts.”

Instagram have been following their competitors very carefully to ensure that they don’t make the same mistakes. They have released features, like video sharing, to help them compete with other platforms. If they continue to grow at this rate, it won’t be long before they are catching up to the top dog, Facebook!
