Hashtags coming to Facebook

The social network Facebook has announced that it is to make hashtags available to a selection of Facebook users.

It is believed that the introduction of these hashtags will make it simpler to search for content on the network site and allow brands to integrate it into their broader social marketing undertaking.

Although there are no advertising products around the new service, over the next few weeks, Facebook intends to introduce additional functionality to assist marketers. This is believed to include a ‘trending hashtags’ tool, incorporating an insights service allowing the marketers to gain an understanding of how they fit into their Facebook advertising strategies.

Facebook’s product manager for hashtags, Greg Lindley says: “To date, there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what’s happening or what people are talking about.

“To bring these conversations more to the forefront, we will be rolling out a series of features that surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about public events, people and topics.”

Facebook hopes that this will back up earlier efforts to improve discoverability of the 4.75 billion pieces of content shared on the social network daily.
