Facebook Set to Make Business Site Similar to LinkedIn

The popular social media site Facebook has plans to follow in the footsteps of LinkedIn, which is the largest business networking site in the world. It is said to be releasing new software which will encourage businesses and professionals to communicate using the site.

‘Facebook at Work’ will allow users to share documents, direct message colleagues and collaborate on their work, whilst keeping their personal accounts completely separate. The layout will be very similar to the original site and users will still be able to scroll through news feeds and join groups.

Professor Andre Spicer, who teaches at Cass Business School in London, has commented on this and said, “It is unlikely to make employees more productive, but it will help them to be more connected and aware.’

He then went on to say how the site could disrupt the workplace; ‘Communication which could easily be dealt with face to face is pushed online- adding another potential source of information overload. It can also mean employees spend more time polishing their Facebook profile than actually working.”

Facebook is yet to confirm the release date of this site as it is said to be in the testing stage at present. Whether it will be able to compete with the likes of LinkedIn and the average email is questionable, but Facebook definitely has the following to draw in a large audience to any new venture!
