Decline in PC sales continues

Tablets continue their rise in popularity as figures released this week show that global shipments of PC’s have slumped again for the sixth consecutive quarter and are now down to their lowest levels since 2008.

In the three months leading up to September, research group Gartner revealed a drop of 8.6 per cent in shipments in the last year, dropping to 80.3m units.

Gartner have also indicated that PC sales will follow this course well into 2014 and analysts believe that the sales of tablets will exceed those of PC’s for the first time in the next quarter.

Principal analyst at Gartner, Mikako Kitagawa said “Consumers’ shift from PC’s to tablets for daily content consumption continued to decrease the installed base of PCs both in mature as well as in emerging markets.

“A greater availability of inexpensive Android tablets attracted first-time consumers in emerging markets, and as supplementary devises in mature markets.”
