Ads to appear in Instagram’s US photo streams

A posting on Instagram’s website has revealed that the photo sharing service is to start putting advertisements on the photo streams of users in the United States.

Instagram, which currently has 150 million users, launched in 2010 and was bought by Facebook for $1bn (£619m) in 2012. It has yet to make a profit.

Instagram said “We have big ideas for the future, and part of making them happen is building Instagram into a sustainable business,”

Following the backlash from users previously, when Instagram altered the terms of service, they were also keen to point out “As always, you own your own photos and videos. The introduction of advertising won’t change this,”

The ads will begin to appear in the US stream in just a few months but will only involve a small number of advertisers.
