2013’s UK Twitter topics topped by sport

The top subjects that UK users have tweeted about this year have been revealed and whilst music, babies and ‘twerking’ have proved popular, it is football that has taken the top spot, and the majority of the top ten chat topics.

Over 25,300 tweets per minute were sent following the birth of Prince George and 132,000 tweets were sent per minute about the election of Pope Francis in Rome but neither of these topics reached the top ten.

Here are the top ten hottest twitter topics of 2013 in terms of tweets per second:

10 England qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil by beating Poland 2-0.
9 Mumford and Sons perform ‘With a little help from my friends’ to close the Glastonbury 2013 festival, with a special appearance from The Vaccines and Vampire Weekend.
8 Barcelona equalled their worst European defeat in their history when they are beaten 4-0 in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final by Bayern Munich.
7 Scotland loses to England in a friendly football match at Wembley.
6 Manchester City are beaten 1-0 as Wigan win the FA Cup Final for the first time in their history.
5 Real Madrid are knocked out of the Champions League on aggregate, despite beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the semi-final second leg.
4 The re-opening of the Maracana stadium in Brazil is marked by a friendly between England and Brazil. The game finishes 2-2.
3 Andy Murray becomes the first male British Wimbledon champion since Fred Perry won it in 1936.
2 Seeing in the New Year brought about the second highest number of tweets per minute in 2013.
1 5th March 2013, Real Madrid beat Manchester united 2-1 and knock them out of the Champions League.
